Montessori Philosophy

Montessori is an educational approach developed by Dr. Maria Montessori over a century ago. Rooted in universal principles of human development, this philosophy recognizes that the ability to absorb information begins at birth and continues as a lifelong journey. Dr. Montessori believed that education is not confined to the classroom but is an ongoing process that extends through adulthood—a belief reflected in her own commitment to continuous learning.

The Montessori method centers on the use of purposefully designed materials and carefully prepared learning environments. Within this setting, children are guided by trained adults who observe and support them as they explore and engage at their own individual pace. Through interaction with the environment, materials, and educators, children’s natural curiosity is ignited, intrinsic interests are discovered, and a lifelong love of learning is cultivated. From these beginnings, the possibilities are truly endless.

About Dr. Maria Montessori

Dr. Maria Montessori was the first female physician in Italy. Her early work in medicine sparked a deep interest in human development, leading her to further studies in philosophy, pedagogy, and anthropology. Through close observation of children, she discovered that learning is driven by inherent behavioral tendencies that guide the development of both the mind and body. While all humans share these tendencies, Dr. Montessori also emphasized that each child is a unique individual, possessing their own interests and capabilities that should be supported and nurtured.

From these insights, she developed what is now known as the Montessori Method—a holistic approach to education that includes:

  • Auto-didactic (self-teaching) materials designed to engage children
  • Prepared environments that support independence and exploration
  • Respectful, trained adults who act as guides rather than instructors

These elements together create a learning experience that is dynamic, individualized, and deeply respectful of the child’s natural development.

According to the North American Montessori Teachers’ Association (NAMTA), there are approximately 4,300 Montessori schools in the United States and around 20,000 worldwide. This includes about 250 public schools and 120 charter schools offering Montessori programs.
